White or Black Dots / Spots on Projector Image – Repair

Small white dots, black dots, a cloudy patch or colour blotches on the picture are very common on older projectors. The cause depends on the projector type, and many of these problems can be repaired.

Common causes

• DLP projectors: failing DMD chip (many white or black dots)
• Dust inside the light path or on the lens
• 3LCD projectors: aged LCD panels or polarizers (yellow, blue or purple patches)
• Damaged color wheel (wrong colours, rainbow effect)

What you can safely check first

• Clean the outside of the lens gently with a microfiber cloth
• Check whether the dots move when you adjust focus — if they do, it may be dust on the lens

Please do not open the projector yourself — high voltage and hot parts inside can be dangerous, and opening it can cause more damage.
